One very ludicrous incident occurred, however (однако, произошел один очень забавный инцидент; ludicrous — смехотворный, нелепый), which I rather welcomed, as it gave us something to laugh at (которому я был даже рад, потому что он дал нам /возможность/ немного посмеяться;welcome — желанный, долгожданный).

Just before we got to the confines of the town (как раз перед тем, как мы добрались до окраин города; confine — граница, предел) a pretty young girl, with some beautiful lilies in her hand, came running forward and presented them to Good (одна прелестная молодая девушка с прекрасными лилиями в руке, выбежала вперед и подарила их Гуду) (somehow they all seemed to like Good (почему-то все /девушки/, казалось, были неравнодушны к Гуду); I think his eye-glass and solitary whisker gave him a fictitious value (мне кажется, что его монокль и одна бакенбарда придавали ему героический флер; solitary — одинокий; единичный, отдельный; fictitious — вымышленный, выдуманный; взятый из романа; value — ценность)), and then said she had a boon to ask (а затем сказала, что у нее есть одна просьба; boon — благо, благодеяние; /арх./ просьба, мольба).

"I'll be hanged if I do (чтоб мне лопнуть, если я сделаю это; to hang— вешать, развешивать; I'll be hanged if... — да провалиться мне сквозь землю, если...)!" said Good, excitedly (возбужденно сказал Гуд).

"Come, come, my dear fellow (ну же, мой дорогой друг)," said Sir Henry, "you can't refuse to oblige a lady (вы не можете отказать этой даме в такой просьбе; tooblige— обязывать, заставлять; делать одолжение, оказывать /небольшую/ услугу)."

"I won't (я не буду)," said Good, obstinately (упрямо сказал Гуд; obstinate— самовольный, упрямый); "it is positively indecent (это совершенно неприлично; positively— прямо, непосредственно; абсолютно, совершенно)."

Good's legs will, I fear, never be so greatly admired again (ногами Гуда, боюсь, больше никогда не будут так сильно восхищаться). Of his melting teeth, and even of his "transparent eye", they wearied more or less, but of his legs, never (его исчезающие зубы и даже его "прозрачный глаз" уже успели им, более или менее, надоесть, но его ноги — вовсе нет: «никогда»; to melt — таять; исчезать, растворяться; to weary — утомлять, надоедать).

It appeared, too, that rather more than two years previously (оказалось к тому же, что более двух лет тому назад: «до этого»; previously — заблаговременно, заранее, перед) a party of Kukuana hunters had descended this path into the desert in search of ostriches (отряд кукуанских охотников спустился по этой тропе в эту пустыню, в поисках страусов), whose plumes were much prized among them for war headdresses (перья которых высоко ценятся среди них в качестве военных головных уборов; prize — вознаграждение, награда; to prize — высоко ценить, оценивать/по достоинству/), and that in the course of their hunt they had been led far from the mountains (и что в ходе той охоты они ушли: «были уведены» далеко от гор), and were much troubled by thirst (и сильно страдали от жажды; trouble — беспокойство, волнение; затруднение, трудность; to trouble — беспокоиться, тревожить; причинять физическую боль, беспокоить).

As we travelled, Infadoos told us that there was another pass over the mountains to the north of the one followed by Solomon's Great Road, or rather that there was a place where it was possible to climb down the wall of cliff that separated Kukuanaland from the desert, and was broken by the towering shapes of Sheba's breasts. It appeared, too, that rather more than two years previously a party of Kukuana hunters had descended this path into the desert in search of ostriches, whose plumes were much prized among them for war headdresses, and that in the course of their hunt they had been led far from the mountains, and were much troubled by thirst.

Seeing, however, trees on the horizon, they made towards them (увидев, однако, деревья на горизонте, они двинулись по направлению к ним), and discovered a large and fertile oasis of some miles in extent, and plentifully watered (и обнаружили большой плодородный оазис, протяженностью в несколько миль и обильно орошаемый; plentiful — изобилующий, обильный; water — вода; to water — смачивать, мочить; поливать, орошать).
