"Pretty things! fine things!" cried the little girl enthusiastically, holding up two glittering fragments of mica. "When we goes back to home I'll give them to brother Bob."

"You'll see prettier things than them soon," said the man confidently (вскоре ты увидишь много чего покрасивее, — с уверенностью сказал мужчина). "You just wait a bit (только подожди немного). "And you too. I'll tell her how awful good you've been. I'll bet she meets us at the door of Heaven with a big pitcher of water, and a lot of buckwheat cakes, hot, and toasted on both sides, like Bob and me was fond of. How long will it be first?"

"I don't know — not very long (не знаю, довольно скоро: «не очень долго»)." The man's eyes were fixed upon the northern horizon (глаза мужчины были прикованы к горизонту в северном направлении; to fix — устанавливать; прикреплять). In the blue vault of the heaven there had appeared three little specks (на голубом небесном своде появились три точки; vault — свод; vault of heaven — небосвод) which increased in size every moment (которые увеличивались в размере с каждым мгновением), so rapidly did they approach (так быстро они приближались). They speedily resolved themselves into three large brown birds (скоро было уже ясно, что это три большие коричневые птицы; to resolve — изменяться, превращаться; разлагаться на составные части), which circled over the heads of the two wanderers (которые кружили над головами двух путешественников), and then settled upon some rocks which overlooked them (а затем уселись на скалах над ними; to overlook — возвышаться). They were buzzards, the vultures of the west (это были грифы, стервятники запада; buzzard — американский гриф), whose coming is the forerunner of death (чье появление — признак приближающейся смерти; forerunner — предвестник).
