Упущенные Российской империей уроки мировой войны приходилось наверстывать позднее. Не всегда эти уроки были приятными. Так, 17 августа 1920 г. 1–я конная армия, подвергшаяся атакам всего 9 польских самолетов, потеряла, по сведениям Н. Морозова, в одной только 6–й дивизии 100 людей и 100 лошадей, причем одно из ее наступлений было отбито исключительно атаками самолетов. В сентябре поляки в Ко­вельской операции применили отряд из пехоты на 45 грузовиках, 9 бронемашинах и артиллерии на прицепах, бросив его в большой разрыв между 4–й и 12–й армиями красных. 11 сентября отряд форсирует Западный Буг и в тот же день, несмотря на плохие дороги, проделывает 60 км. На хороших дорогах средняя скорость составляла 15 км/ч, и за 26 часов было преодолено 140 км. Утром 12 сентября отряд врывается в Ковель — базу 12–й армии, управление ее дивизиями полностью парализовано, и части отходят за Ковель. Позднее советские войска в Карелии и Средней Азии применяли автоматы Федорова. В 1924 г. комиссией «кавалериста–ретрограда» Буденного было принято постановление о разработке автоматов на 10, 20 и 50 патронов при весе оружия в 10 фунтов. В 1928 г. легкобомбардировочная эскадрилья бомбила и обстреливала басмачей в Кара–Кумах, а затем высадила посадочный десант из 15 человек с тремя пулеметами. В 1929 г. гидросамолеты МР-1 с плавбазы «Амур» топили на Сунгари китайские вооруженные пароходы.

Мир шел к новым горизонтам, слишком быстро забывая страшные уроки прошлого. А прошлое еще не раз напомнит о себе. Впереди были оборона Мадрида, Зимняя война, Ржев и Гуадалканал, позиционное противостояние на 38–й параллели в Корее, осада Дьенбьенфу и туннельная война во Вьетнаме, ирано–иракская война… Но это будут уже другие войны.
