Palatini: соединения, имевшие более высокий статус, нежели comitatenses; служба в них считалась более престижной. При этом palatini, также как и comitatenses, составляли часть полевой армии периода Поздней античности (IV— VI веков).
Protectoresdomestici: личные телохранители императора. По-видимому, появились по крайней мере во времена Диоклетиана. Отчасти этот отряд выполнял функции кадетского корпуса для офицерского состава, поскольку его членов часто назначали на командные посты в других войсках.
