Что-же касается «бородатого» идола из Тиауанако, то лицо его, скорее всего, закрывает не борода, а маска. Видимо, она изображает усы на морде животного — ягуара или обезьяны-капуцина. До того как местное божество стало мыслиться в облике человека, индейцы могли представлять его полуживотным. Эти более древние изображения того же или родственного персонажа найдены — правда, не в Тиауанако, а на керамических сосудах и тканях из богатых погребений с южного побережья Перу. (В первых веках до нашей эры между районом озера Титикака и южным побережьем поддерживались интенсивные связи.)

Мы отметили лишь часть неточностей и ошибок, содержащихся в книге М. Стингла. При этом следует подчеркнуть, что Стингл — прежде всего писатель. Работая с источниками, он силой своего богатого воображения создает живой и яркий образ давно исчезнувших культур, смело домысливая то, что ученым зачастую вообще не известно. В этом и состоит привлекательность многих его книг, в том числе книги о прошлом народов Анд.
