I see it (я вижу ее), I smell it (я чувствую ее запах), I taste it (я чувствую ее вкус) — it is salt (он соленый); it runs red upon the ground (она льется красным /потоком/ по земле), it rains down from the skies (она льется дождем с небес).

"Footsteps (шаги)! footsteps! footsteps! the tread of the white man coming from afar (поступь белого человека, пришедшего издалека). It shakes the earth (она сотрясает землю); the earth trembles before her master (земля дрожит перед своим хозяином).

How old am I, think ye (сколько мне лет: «на сколько я стара», как вы думаете)? Your fathers knew me (ваши отцы знали меня), and their fathers knew me (и их отцы знали меня), and their fathers' fathers (и отцы их отцов). I have seen the white man, and how his desires (я уже видела белого человека, /и знаю/, каковы его желания). I am old, but the mountains are older than I (я стара, но горы старее меня). Who made the great road, tell me (кто построил великую дорогу, скажите мне)? Who wrote in pictures on the rocks, tell me (кто написал картины на скалах, скажите мне)?
