"I am the king's ox," was the low answer.

Scragga stepped forward with an ill-favored grin (Скрагга сделал шаг вперед с отвратительной ухмылкой; ill-favored — некрасивый; отвратительный), and lifted his spear (и поднял свое копье). The poor victim covered his eyes with his hand and stood still (бедная жертва закрыла глаза рукой и стояла неподвижно; to cover — накрывать, закрывать, покрывать). As for us, we were petrified with horror (что касается нас, то мы просто окаменели от ужаса; to petrify— превращать/ся/ в камень, окаменевать; petrified— ископаемый, окаменелый; застывший, оцепеневший).

"Greeting, Twala, king of the Kukuanas (приветствуем /тебя/ Твала, король кукуанов)," I answered.

"White people, whence come ye, and what seek ye (белые люди, откуда вы прибыли и что вы ищите)?"

"We come from the stars, ask us not how (мы прибыли со звезд, не спрашивай нас как). We come to see this land (мы прибыли, чтобы посмотреть на эту землю)."

"Ye come from far to see a little thing (вы прибыли издалека, чтобы взглянуть на такую безделицу: «маленькую вещь»). And that man with ye (а этот мужчина с вами)," pointing to Umbopa (/сказал он/, указывая пальцем на Амбопу), "does he too come from the stars (он тоже прибыл со звезд)?"

"Even so; there are people of thy color in the heavens above (да, в небесах над нами есть люди и с твоим цветом /кожи/); but ask not of matters too high for thee, Twala, the king (но не спрашивай о таких вещах, которые слишком сложны для тебя, Твала, король; high— высокий; зд. выше твоего понимания)."
