The Mabden removed the yokes from the horses and led them to the water. From the waggons they took cooking pots and poles and began to build fires.

By sunset they were eating, though their prisoners, still tied to the chariots, were given nothing.

When they were done with eating, they began to drink again and soon more than half the herd was insensible, sprawled on the grass and sleeping where they fell. Others were rolling about on the ground engaged in mock fights, many of which increased in savagery so that knives and axes were drawn and some blood spilled.

The Mabden who had originally (мабден, который первоначально) called for the caravan to stop (потребовал, /чтобы/ караван остановился; to call for — требовать, обязывать; to call — кричать, звать), roared at the fighting men (/теперь/ заорал на дерущихся /людей/) and began to stagger among them (и начал, шатаясь, /разнимать/ их; to stagger — шататься, идти шатаясь, колебаться; among — между, посреди), a wineskin clutched in one hand (бурдюк с вином сжимая в одной руке), kicking them (пиная их; to kick — ударять ногой, лягать/ся/) and plainly ordering them to stop (и явно приказывая им остановиться; plainly — ясно, четко, откровенно). A few of the Mabden laughed (несколько мабденов засмеялись) and nodded and rose up (кивнули и встали; to rise-rose-risen), moving through the faint light of the evening (двигаясь сквозь слабый свет вечера) to where their prisoners lay (/туда/, где их пленники лежали; to lie-lay-lain). The leader stepped into the circle (вожак вошел в круг; to step into — входить; to step — ступать, шагать, идти) and confronted the prisoners (и встал напротив пленных; to confront — противостоять, стоять лицом к лицу).

A few of the Mabden laughed and nodded and rose up, moving through the faint light of the evening to where their prisoners lay. The prisoners were pushed into the centre of this circle and stood there staring in terror at the warriors.

The leader stepped into the circle and confronted the prisoners.

`When we took you with us (когда мы захватили вас с собой; to take — захватывать, брать; to take-took-taken) from your village (из вашей деревни) I promised you (я говорил вам; to promise — обещать, уверять) that we Denledhyssi (что мы, денледисси) hated only one thing (ненавидим лишь одну вещь) more than we hated Shefanhow (более, чем мы ненавидим шефанхау). One of the prisoners mumbled (один из пленников /что-то/ пробормотал), staring at the ground (глядя в землю; to stare — пристально глядеть, уставиться). The Mabden leader moved quickly (мабденский вожак подошел быстро), pushing the head of his axe (толкая обух своего топора; to push — толкать, нажимать, подсовывать; head — голова, ум; верхняя главная часть предмета, ударная или режущая часть, обух, боек) under the man’s chin (под подбородок этого человека) and lifting it up (и приподнимая его вверх).

`When we took you with us from your village I promised you that we Denledhyssi hated only one thing more than we hated Shefanhow. Do you remember what that was?

One of the prisoners mumbled, staring at the ground. The Mabden leader moved quickly, pushing the head of his axe under the man’s chin and lifting it up.

`Aye, you have learned your lesson well, friend. Say it again.

The prisoner's tongue was thick in his mouth (язык пленника словно застрял в горле: «был толстым во рту»; thick — толстый, густой). His broken lips moved again (его разбитые губы двигались снова) and he turned his eyes to the darkening skies (он посмотрел: «повернул глаза» на темнеющие небеса) and tears fell down his cheeks (слезы падали с его щек) and he yelled in a wild, cracked voice (он крикнул диким, надтреснутым голосом):

`Those who lick Shefanhow urine (тех, кто лижет мочу шефанхау)!

And a great groan shuddered from him (продолжительный стон исходил от него; to shudder — вздрагивать, бросать в дрожь) and then he screamed (затем он пронзительно вскрикнул; to scream — пронзительно кричать, визжать).

The Mabden leader smiled (улыбнулся), drew back his axe (отвел назад свой топор) and rammed the haft (и ударил рукоятью; to ram — таранить, трамбовать, вбивать; ram — баран, таран; haft — рукоятка, черенок) into the man’s stomach (в живот человека; stomach — желудок, живот) so that the scream was cut short (так что крик был прерван; to cut short — сокращать, обрезать) and he doubled over in agony (и тот согнулся пополам в мучении = от боли; to double over — складывать/ся/ вдвое, скрючиваться /от боли и т. д. /; to double — удваивать/ся/, складывать/ся/; agony — агония, мука, боль).
