The valley was full of poplars (долина была заполнена = здесь росло много тополей), elms and birch (вязов и берез) and looked peaceful (/она/ выглядела мирной) in the gentle light of the early afternoon (в мягком свете полуденного /солнца/; early — ранний; afternoon — время после полудня, послеобеденное время). But where was the castle (но где /же/ замок), he wondered (он удивлялся).

Save for dead fires and some litter, Prince Corum saw no further signs of Mabden before he breasted the high green hills that enclosed Valley Crachah and searched with his eyes for the castle of Princess Lorim.

The valley was full of poplars, elms and birch and looked peaceful in the gentle light of the early afternoon. But where was the castle, he wondered.

Corum drew his map again (вытащил карту снова) from within his byrnie (из-под кольчуги; from within — изнутри) and consulted it (и сверился с ней; to consult — советоваться, справляться /о чем-либо/). The castle should be almost in the centre of the valley (замок должен находиться почти посередине долины; centre — центр, середина), surrounded by six rings of poplars (окруженный шестью кольцами тополей; ring — кольцо, окружность) and two outer rings of elms (и двумя внешними кольцами вязов). He looked again (он посмотрел снова).

Yes, there were the rings of poplars and elms (да, там /действительно/ были кольца тополей и вязов). And near the centre, no castle (но около центра — никакого замка), just a cloud of mist (только облако тумана).

But there should be no mist on such a day (но не должно быть тумана в такой /ясный/ день). It could only be smoke (это мог быть только дым).

Corum drew his map again from within his byrnie and consulted it. The castle should be almost in the centre of the valley, surrounded by six rings of poplars and two outer rings of elms. He looked again.

Yes, there were the rings of poplars and elms. And near the centre, no castle, just a cloud of mist.

But there should be no mist on such a day. It could only be smoke.

Prince Corum rode rapidly down the hill (поскакал быстро вниз /по склону/ холма). He rode until he reached the first of the rings of trees (он скакал, пока не достиг первого из колец деревьев) and he peered through the other rings (и он всмотрелся сквозь другие кольца; to peer — вглядываться; показываться /о солнце, луне/) but could, as yet, see nothing (но все еще не мог ничего увидеть; as yet — все еще, пока что). He sniffed the smoke (он почуял дым; to sniff — сопеть, фыркать; вдыхать через нос).

He passed through more rings of trees (он прошел /еще/ через несколько рядов деревьев; to pass through — пересекать, проходить через; more — больше, еще; дополнительный, дальнейший /употребляется с числительным или неопределенным местоимением/) and now the smoke stung his eyes and throat (и теперь дым щипал глаза и горло; to sting — жалить, жечь, причинять острую боль; to sting-stung-stung) and he could see a few black shapes in it (и он /Корум/ смог различить несколько темных очертаний в нем; black — черный, темный, смуглый).

He passed through the final ring of poplars and he began to choke as the smoke filled his lungs and his watering eyes made out the shapes. Sharp crags, tumbled rocks, blistered metal, burned beams…

Prince Corum saw a ruin (увидел руины). It was without a doubt the ruin of Castle Crachah (это были, без сомнения, руины замка Крашах). A smouldering ruin (тлеющие руины; to smoulder — медленно гореть /без огня/, тлеть). Fire had brought Castle Crachah down (огонь опустошил замок Крашах; to bring down — свалить, сломать, вывести из строя). Fire had eaten her folk (огонь = пожар поглотил его обитателей; to eat-ate-eaten; folk — люди, родня; народ), for now Corum (так как теперь Корум), as he rode his snorting horse around the perimeter of the ruins (проезжая на своем фыркающем коне вокруг руин; to ride; perimeter — периметр, внешняя граница), made out blackened skeletons (замечал почерневшие скелеты). And beyond the ruins were signs of battle (за пределами развалин находились следы битвы). A broken Mabden chariot (сломанная мабденская колесница; to break-broke-broken). Some Mabden corpses (несколько трупов мабденов). An old Vadhagh woman (старая вадагская женщина), chopped into several pieces (разрубленная на несколько кусков; to chop — рубить, нарезать).

Even now the crows and the ravens (даже теперь вороны; crow — ворона, ворон; любая птица черного цвета; raven — ворон) were beginning to sidle in (начинали слетаться /на останки/; to sidle — /под/ходить бочком, украдкой), risking the smoke (несмотря на дым; to risk — рисковать, отваживаться). Prince Corum began to understand what sorrow must be (начал понимать чем горе должно быть = познал, /что такое/ горе; to begin-began-begun; sorrow — горе, печаль). He thought that the emotion he felt was that (он подумал, что чувство, /которое/ он испытывал, было этим = догадался, что это горе; to think; to feel).

Prince Corum saw a ruin. It was without a doubt the ruin of Castle Crachah. A smouldering ruin. Fire had brought Castle Crachah down. Fire had eaten her folk, for now Corum, as he rode his snorting horse around the perimeter of the ruins, made out blackened skeletons. And beyond the ruins were signs of battle. A broken Mabden chariot. Some Mabden corpses. An old Vadhagh woman, chopped into several pieces.

Even now the crows and the ravens were beginning to sidle in, risking the smoke. Prince Corum began to understand what sorrow must be. He thought that the emotion he felt was that.

He called out once (он крикнул один раз; to call out — выкрикивать, кричать; вызывать /врача и т. д. /), in the hope that some inhabitant of Castle Crachah lived (в надежде, что кто-нибудь из обитателей замка Крашах жив), but there was no reply (но не было ответа = никто не ответил). Slowly, Prince Corum turned away (принц Корум медленно поехал прочь; to turn away — отворачиваться, уходить). He rode towards the East (он ехал на восток). Towards Castle Sarn (к замку Сарн).
