Octavia sensed that grim peril lurked in those leafy fastnesses Her breath came pantingly and she pressed close to her protector (ее дыхание вырывалось часто и тяжело, и она прижалась поближе к своему защитнику; to pant — дышать часто и тяжело). But the forest was silent now (однако сейчас в лесу было тихо), and they saw no shape of menace (и они не увидели угрожающих фигур) until they emerged from the trees and glimpsed a figure standing on the edge of the cliffs (пока не вышли из-за деревьев и не увидели фигуру, стоящую на краю утесов).

merlon ['m:ln], menace ['mens], edge [e]

Then, making one end fast to a merlon, he slid down after her. There was but one way of escape from the island — the stair on the western cliffs. In that direction he hurried, swinging wide around the spot from which had come the cries and the sound of terrible blows.

Jehungir Agha had escaped the doom (Джихангир

Ага избежал гибели) that had overtaken his warriors (которая настигла его воинов; to overtake — нагнать) when an iron giant sallied suddenly from the gate (когда железный исполин внезапно возник из ворот и атаковал их; to sally — внезапно выходить из укрытия и переходить в наступление; внезапно возникать) and battered and crushed them into bits of shredded flesh and splintered bone (и размолотил и раздробил их на куски измельченной плоти и раздробленных костей; to shred — рвать на клочки; измельчать). When he saw the swords of his archers break on that manlike juggernaut п.), he had known it was no human foe they faced (он понял, что они столкнулись лицом к лицу не с врагом-человеком; to know — знать; понимать;to face — встречаться; сталкиваться лицом к лицу), and he had fled (и он убежал; to flee — убегать), hiding in the deep woods (скрывшись глубоко в лесу) until the sounds of slaughter ceased (пока не прекратились звуки бойни). Then he crept back to the stair (потом он прокрался назад к лестнице; to creep — ползать; красться), but his boatmen were not waiting for him (но его гребцы не ждали его).

juggernaut ['n:t], slaughter ['sl:t], cease [si:s]

Jehungir Agha had escaped the doom that had overtaken his warriors when an iron giant sallied suddenly from the gate and battered and crushed them into bits of shredded flesh and splintered bone. When he saw the swords of his archers break on that manlike juggernaut, he had known it was no human foe they faced, and he had fled, hiding in the deep woods until the sounds of slaughter ceased. Then he crept back to the stair, but his boatmen were not waiting for him.

They had heard the screams (они услышали вопли), and presently (а вскоре), waiting nervously, had seen, on the cliff above them (нервно ожидая, увидели на холме над ними), a blood-smeared monster waving gigantic arms in awful triumph (окровавленного монстра, размахивавшего гигантскими руками в ужасном триумфе; to smear — намазывать; размазывать; мазать толстым слоем). They had waited for no more When Jehungir came upon the cliffs (когда Джихангир пришел на утесы), they were just vanishing among the reeds beyond earshot (они как раз исчезали среди камышей за пределами слышимости; earshot — расстояние, на котором слышен звук, предел слышимости). Khosatral was gone (Хозатрал пропал) — had either returned to the city or was prowling the forest in search of the man who had escaped him outside the walls (либо вернулся в город, либо рыскал по лесу в поисках человека, который сбежал от него за стены /города/; to prowl — красться, бродить, скитаться /в поисках чего-л./).

nervously ['n:vsl], prowl [praul], search [s:]

They had heard the screams, and presently, waiting nervously, had seen, on the cliff above them, a blood-smeared monster waving gigantic arms in awful triumph. They had waited for no more. When Jehungir came upon the cliffs, they were just vanishing among the reeds beyond earshot. Khosatral was gone — had either returned to the city or was prowling the forest in search of the man who had escaped him outside the walls.

Jehungir was just preparing to descend the stairs and depart in Conan's boat (Джихангир как раз готовился спуститься по лестнице и отправиться в лодке Конана), when he saw the hetman and the girl emerge from the trees (когда увидел, как из-за деревьев появились гетман и девушка). The experience which had congealed his blood and almost blasted his reason had not altered Jehungir's intentions towards the kozak chief

The sight of the man he had come to kill filled him with gratification He was astonished to see the girl he had given to Jelal Khan (он был изумлен, увидев девушку, которую он подарил Джилал-Хану), but he wasted no time on her (но он не стал тратить даром времени на нее). Lifting his bow he drew the shaft to its head and loosed (подняв лук, он натянул стрелу до наконечника и выстрелил; to draw — рисовать; тянуть;shaft — древко копья; стрела; head — голова; наконечник;to loose — освобождать; выстрелить). Conan crouched and the arrow splintered on a tree (Конан пригнулся, и стрела расщепилась о дерево), and Conan laughed (а Конан засмеялся).

"Dog!" he taunted (собака! "You can't hit me (ты не можешь попасть в меня; to hit — ударять; попадать)! I was not born to die on Hyrkanian steel (я родился не для того, чтобы умереть от гирканской стали; to bear — носить; рожать)! Try again, pig of Turan (попробуй еще раз, туранская свинья)!"

blast [bl:st], bow [bu], laugh [l:f]

Jehungir was just preparing to descend the stairs and depart in Conan's boat, when he saw the hetman and the girl emerge from the trees. The experience which had congealed his blood and almost blasted his reason had not altered Jehungir's intentions towards the kozak chief. The sight of the man he had come to kill filled him with gratification. He was astonished to see the girl he had given to Jelal Khan, but he wasted no time on her. Lifting his bow he drew the shaft to its head and loosed. Conan crouched and the arrow splintered on a tree, and Conan laughed.

"Dog!" he taunted. "You can't hit me! I was not born to die on Hyrkanian steel! Try again, pig of Turan!"

Jehungir did not try again That was his last arrow He drew his scimitar and advanced (он обнажил свой симитар и двинулся вперед; to draw — чертить; обнажать /меч и т. п./), confident in his spired helmet and close-meshed mail (уверенный в своем остроконечном шлеме и мелкоячеистой кольчуге). Conan met him halfway in a blinding whirl of swords (Конан встретил его на полпути в слепящем вихре мечей; to meet — встречать; whirl — кружение; вихрь). The curved blades ground together (кривые клинки стачивали друг друга; to grind — стачивать; шлифовать), sprang apart (отскакивали в стороны; to spring — скакать), circled in glittering arcs (кружили сверкающими дугами) that blurred the sight which tried to follow them (которые затуманивали взор, пытавшийся уследить за ними; to blur — пачкать; затуманивать; to follow — следовать; следить). Octavia, watching, did not see the stroke (Октавия, наблюдая, не увидела удара), but she heard its chopping impact and saw Jehungir fall (но она услышала его рубящий удар и увидела, как упал Джихангир), blood spurting from his side (с бьющей струей крови из бока) where the Cimmerian's steel had sundered his mail and bitten to his spine (где сталь киммерийца разъединила его кольчугу и прорубилась до позвоночника; to bite — кусать; рубить, колоть /об оружии/).

advance [d'v:ns], ground [raund], heard [h:d]

Jehungir did not try again. That was his last arrow. He drew his scimitar and advanced, confident in his spired helmet and close-meshed mail. Conan met him halfway in a blinding whirl of swords. The curved blades ground together, sprang apart, circled in glittering arcs that blurred the sight which tried to follow them. Octavia, watching, did not see the stroke, but she heard its chopping impact and saw Jehungir fall, blood spurting from his side where the Cimmerian's steel had sundered his mail and bitten to his spine.

But Octavia's scream was not caused by the death of her former master With a crash of bending boughs, Khosatral Khel was upon them The girl could not flee (девушка не могла убежать); a moaning cry escaped her (у нее вырвался стонущий крик) as her knees gave way and pitched her groveling to the sward (когда ее колени подогнулись и уронили ее ниц на траву; to pitch — наклонять; бросать, кидать;to grovel — лежать ниц, ползать; sward — газон; травяной покров).
