Infadoos saw us looking at them and volunteered a remark:
"The road ends there," he said, pointing to the mountains, known among the Kukuanas as the "Three Witches."
"Why does it end?" I asked.
"Who knows?" he answered, with a shrug; "the mountains are full of caves, and there is a great pit between them. It is there that the wise men of old time used to go to get whatever it was they came to this country for, and it is there now that our kings are buried in the Place of Death."
"What was it they came for (а зачем они приходили)?" I asked, eagerly (спросил я нетерпеливо; eager— страстно желающий, жаждущий /о человеке/, нетерпеливый).
"Nay, I know not (нет, я этого не знаю). My lords who come from the stars should know (мои повелители, прибывшие со звезд, должны знать /об этом/)," he answered, with a quick look (ответил он, /бросив на меня/ быстрый взгляд). Evidently he knew more than he chose to say (очевидно, что он знал больше, чем захотел рассказать;to choose— выбирать; хотеть, желать).
"Yes," I went on (продолжил я), "you are right (ты прав); in the stars we know many things (на звездах мы знаем много чего). I have heard, for instance, that the wise men of old (я слышал, например, что мудрые люди прошедших времен; old — собир. старики, пожилые люди; прошлое, стародавние времена; of old — прежде, в прежнее время) came to those mountains to get bright stones (приходили в эти горы, чтобы заполучить сверкающие камни), pretty playthings (красивые безделушки: «игрушки»), and yellow iron (и желтый металл: «железо»)."
"My lord is wise (мой повелитель мудр)," he answered, coldly (ответил он холодно; cold — холодный; неприветливый); "I am but a child and cannot talk with my lord on such things (а я всего лишь ребенок и не могу разговаривать с моим повелителем о таких вещах). My lord must speak with Gagool the old, at the king's place (мой повелитель должен поговорить
со старой Гагулой в резиденции короля), who is wise even as my lord (которая так же мудра, как мой повелитель)," and he turned away (и он отвернулся).instance ['Instqns], plaything ['pleITIN], yellow ['jelqu], iron ['aIqn]

As soon as he was gone I turned to the others and pointed out the mountains (как только он ушел, я повернулся к остальным и указал на эти горы). "There are Solomon's diamond mines (вот алмазные копи царя Соломона)," I said.
Umbopa was standing with them (Амбопа стоял /рядом/ с ними), apparently plunged in one of the fits of abstraction which were common to him (явно погруженный в один из своих приступов рассеянности, которые были ему так свойственны; abstraction — абстракция, отвлечение; погруженность в мысли, задумчивость; common — общий, всеобщий; частый, обыкновенный), and caught my words (и услышал мои слова; to catch — ловить, поймать; ловить, улавливать/слова, смыслит. п./).
"Yes, Macumazahn," he put in, in Zulu (вступил он в разговор, по-зулусски), "the diamonds are surely there (алмазы действительно там), and you shall have them (и вы их получите), since you white men are so fond of toys and money (раз уж белые люди так любят безделушки и деньги; toy — забава, игрушка; безделушка, безделка)."
"How dost thou know that, Umbopa (откуда ты знаешь об этом, Амбопа)?" I asked, sharply, for I did not like his mysterious ways (резко спросил я, потому что мне не нравилось его таинственное поведение; way— путь, дорога; манера, образ действия).
He laughed (он рассмеялся); "I dreamed it in the night, white men (я видел сон ночью, белый человек)," and then he, too, turned upon his heel and went (затем и он, также, резко повернулся и ушел; heel— пятка; to turn on one's heels— резко повернуться, бесцеремонно повернуться к кому-либо спиной).

He laughed; "I dreamed it in the night, white men," and then he, too, turned upon his heel and went.
