"This is terrible!" I said to Holmes. "What is to be done?"
"The door must come down," he answered, and, springing against it, he put all his weight upon the lock. It creaked and groaned, but did not yield. Together we flung ourselves upon it once more, and this time it gave way with a sudden snap, and we found ourselves within Bartholomew Sholto's chamber.
It appeared to have been fitted up as a chemical laboratory. A double line of glass-stoppered bottles was drawn up upon the wall opposite the door, and the table was littered over with Bunsen burners, test-tubes, and retorts. In the corners stood carboys of acid in wicker baskets. One of these appeared to leak or to have been broken, for a stream of dark-coloured liquid had trickled out from it, and the air was heavy with a peculiarly pungent, tar-like odour. A set of steps stood at one side of the room, in the midst of a litter of lath and plaster, and above them there was an opening in the ceiling large enough for a man to pass through. At the foot of the steps a long coil of rope was thrown carelessly together.
By the table, in a wooden arm-chair, the master of the house was seated all in a heap (возле
"You see," he said, with a significant raising of the eyebrows
In the light of the lantern I read, with a thrill of horror, "The sign of the four (в свете фонаря я прочитал, содрогнувшись от ужаса: «с трепетом ужаса»: «Знак четырех»)."
feature ['fi:tS@], coarse [kO:s]
By the table, in a wooden arm-chair, the master of the house was seated all in a heap, with his head sunk upon his left shoulder, and that ghastly, inscrutable smile upon his face. He was stiff and cold, and had clearly been dead many hours. It seemed to me that not only his features but all his limbs were twisted and turned in the most fantastic fashion. By his hand upon the table there lay a peculiar instrument, — a brown, close-grained stick, with a stone head like a hammer, rudely lashed on with coarse twine. Beside it was a torn sheet of note-paper with some words scrawled upon it. Holmes glanced at it, and then handed it to me.
"You see," he said, with a significant raising of the eyebrows.
In the light of the lantern I read, with a thrill of horror, "The sign of the four."
"In God's name, what does it all mean?"
"It means murder," said he, stooping over the dead man "Ah, I expected it (а, я ожидал этого). Look here (смотрите сюда)!" He pointed to what looked like a long, dark thorn (он указал на то, что выглядело как длинный темный шип) stuck in the skin just above the ear (воткнувшийся в кожу как раз над ухом; to stick — втыкать).
"It looks like a thorn," said I
"It is a thorn (это и есть шип). You may pick it out (можете вытащить его). But be careful, for it is poisoned (но будьте осторожны — он отравлен)."
I took it up between my finger and thumb (я схватил его двумя пальцами: «я взял его между пальцем /указательным/ и большим пальцем и вытащил»; to take up — обсуждать; снимать, удалять). It came away from the skin so readily (он вышел из кожи так легко; to come away — уходить; уезжать; отделяться ; отрываться; readily — охотно, быстро; легко, без труда) that hardly any mark was left behind (что едва можно было различить след: «что едва ли осталась какая-нибудь отметина»; to leave behind — оставлять после себя). One tiny speck of blood showed where the puncture had been
"This is all an insoluble mystery to me," said I "It grows darker instead of clearer (все становится еще загадочнее, вместо того, чтобы проясняться; dark — темный; непонятный; clear — светлый, ясный; понятный)."
"On the contrary," he answered, "it clears every instant (наоборот, — ответил он, — она проясняется с каждым мгновением). I only require a few missing links to have an entirely connected case (мне не хватает только нескольких недостающих звеньев, чтобы выстроить: «иметь» полную картину: «целиком связное дело»; to require — приказывать, требовать; нуждаться; to connect — соединять; связывать)."
puncture ['pVnktS@]

We had almost forgotten our companion's presence (мы чуть не забыли о присутствии нашего спутника; to forget — забывать) since we entered the chamber (войдя: «с тех пор, как мы вошли» в комнату). He was still standing in the door-way, the very picture of terror (он все еще стоял в дверях, воплощение испуга: «настоящая картина ужаса»), wringing his hands and moaning to himself (ломая руки и стеная; to wring — крутить, выламывать; to moan — стонать). Suddenly, however, he broke out into a sharp, querulous cry (и вдруг внезапно он издал пронзительный недовольный крик; to break out — внезапно начинаться; to break out into a cry — внезапно закричать; sharp — острый; резкий, пронзительный; querulous — капризный, жалующийся, недовольный).
"The treasure is gone!" he said (сокровища исчезли; to go — идти; уходить; исчезать). "They have robbed him of the treasure (они украли его сокровища; to rob — грабить)! There is the hole through which we lowered it (вот дыра, через которую мы спустили их). I helped him to do it (я помог ему это делать)! I was the last person who saw him (я был последним, кто его видел; to see — видеть)! I left him here last night, and I heard him lock the door as I came down-stairs (я оставил его здесь прошлым вечером, и, спускаясь по лестнице: «идя вниз по лестнице», я слышал, как он запер дверь)."
querulous ['kwerul@s]
We had almost forgotten our companion's presence since we entered the chamber. He was still standing in the door-way, the very picture of terror, wringing his hands and moaning to himself. Suddenly, however, he broke out into a sharp, querulous cry.

"What time was that (который был час)?"
"It was ten o'clock (было десять часов). And now he is dead, and the police will be called in (а теперь он мертв, и позовут полицию; to call — звать; to call in — отзывать; вызывать), and I shall be suspected of having had a hand in it (и меня заподозрят в причастности; to have a hand in something — участвовать в чем-либо, быть замешанным в чем-либо). Oh, yes, I am sure I shall (о, я уверен, что так и будет). But you don't think so, gentlemen (но вы так не думаете, джентльмены)? Surely you don't think that it was I (конечно, вы не думаете, что это был я)? Is it likely that I would have brought you here if it were I (разве возможно, чтобы я привел вас сюда, если бы это был я)? Oh, dear! oh, dear (о Боже! о Боже)! I know that I shall go mad (я знаю, что я сойду с ума)!" He jerked his arms and stamped his feet in a kind of convulsive frenzy (он ломал руки и топал ногами в подобии конвульсивного припадка; to jerk — резкое движение, толчок; дергаться, биться; frenzy — безумие; маниакальное возбуждение).
