But there is a legend in the land that once, many generations gone, a white man crossed the mountains, and was led by a woman to the secret chamber and shown the wealth, but before he could take it she betrayed him, and he was driven by the king of the day back to the mountains, and since then no man has entered the chamber."

"The story is surely true, Ignosi (история эта действительно верна, Игнози), for on the mountain we found the white man (потому что на горе мы обнаружили того белого человека)," I said.

"Yes, we found him (да, мы его нашли). And now I have promised ye (и, так как я пообещал вам) that if ye can find that chamber, and the stones are there (что, если вы сможете найти этот тайник, и камни окажутся там; chamber — комната, кабинет) — "

"The stone upon thy forehead proves that they are there (камень на твоем челе доказывает, что они там)," I put in, pointing to the great diamond (вставил я, указывая на огромный алмаз) I had taken from Twala's dead brows (который я забрал с мертвого чела Твалы).

"Mayhap; if they are there (возможно; и если они там)," he said, "ye shall have as many as ye can take hence (то вы возьмете столько, сколько сможете унести отсюда) — if, indeed, ye would leave me, my brothers (если, конечно, вы /захотите/ оставить меня, братья мои)."

"First we must find the chamber (сперва мы должны найти этот тайник)," said I.

In a few minutes she came (через несколько минут она пришла), hurried along by two guards (подгоняемая двумя стражниками), whom she was cursing as she walked (которых она, пока шла, проклинала).

"What will ye with me, Ignosi (что ты от меня хочешь, Игнози)?" she piped (пропищала она). "Ye dare not touch me (не смей тронуть меня). If ye touch me I will blast ye as ye sit (если ты тронешь меня, то я уничтожу тебя на месте: «там же, где ты сидишь»; to blast— сдувать порывом ветра; взрывать; губить, уничтожать). Beware of my magic (берегись моей магии)."

"Ha! ha!" she piped, "none know but I, and I will never tell thee (никто не знает, кроме меня, и я никогда не скажу тебе). The white devils shall go hence empty-handed (белым дьяволам придется уйти отсюда с пустыми руками)."

"Thou wilt tell me (ты скажешь мне). I will make thee tell me (я заставлю тебя сказать мне)."

"How, O king (как, о король)? Thou art great, but can thy power wring the truth from a woman (ты могуч, но сможет ли твоя сила вырвать правду у женщины; to wring— скручивать; вымогать)?"

"It is difficult, yet will I do it (это трудно, и все же я сделаю это)."

"How, O king?"

"Nay, thus; if thou tellest not thou shalt slowly die (а вот как, если ты не скажешь, то ты будешь медленно умирать = умрешь медленной смертью)."
