"Good! good! Make strong your hearts to bear what ye shall see. Comes, thou too, Infadoos, who betrayed thy master?"

Infadoos frowned as he answered (Инфадус нахмурился и ответил): "Nay, I come not; it is not for me to enter there (нет, я не пойду, мне нельзя входить туда). But thou, Gagool, curb thy tongue (а ты, Гагула, придержи свой язык; to curb— надевать узду /на лошадь/; обуздывать, сдерживать), and beware how thou dealest with my lords (и следи за тем, как ты ведешь себя с моими повелителями; to be ware— беречься, остерегаться; to deal— раздавать, давать; обходиться, поступать; вести себя как-либо по отношению к кому-либо). At thy hands will I require them (с тебя: «с твоих рук» я спрошу за них; to require— приказывать, требовать; требовать /чего-либо/), and if a hair of them be hurt, Gagool, be thou fifty times a witch, thou shalt die (и если хоть волос упадет с их головы, Гагула, будь ты хоть пятьдесят раз ведьмой, ты умрешь; to hurt— причинить боль; ранить, ушибить). Hearest, thou (ты слышишь)?"

"I hear, Infadoos (я слышу, Инфадус); I know thee, thou didst ever love big words (я знаю тебя, ты всегда любил громкие слова); when thou wast a babe I remember thou didst threaten thine own mother (когда ты был маленьким: «ребенком», я помню, как ты угрожал своей собственной матери). That was but the other day (а это было всего-то на днях/недавно). But fear not, fear not; I live but to do the bidding of the king (но не бойся, не бойся, я живу только для того, чтобы исполнить приказание короля). I have done the bidding of many kings, Infadoos (я исполняла приказания многих королей, Инфадус), till in the end they did mine (пока, в конце концов, они не исполняли мои). Ha! ha! I go to look upon their faces once more, and Twala's, too (я отправляюсь еще разок взглянуть на их лица, и на лицо Твалы тоже)! Come on, come on, here is the lamp (ну же, пойдем, вот светильник)," and she drew a great gourd full of oil, and fitted with a rush wick, from under her fur cloak (и она вытащила большую тыкву, наполненную маслом, с фитилем из тростника, из-под своей меховой накидки; tofit— быть впору, быть в самый раз; снаряжать, оснащать).

"Art thou coming, Foulata (ты идешь /с нами/, Фоулата)?" asked Good in his villainous kitchen Kukuana (спросил Гуд на ужасном ломаном кукуанском языке; villainous — мерзкий, подлый; отвратительный, ужасный; kitchen — кухня, ср. kitchen Latin — кухонная латынь, т.е. средневековая монастырская латынь, полная ошибок) in which he had been improving himself under that lady's tuition (в котором он совершенствовался, обучаясь у этой леди; to improve — улучшаться, совершенствоваться; tuition — обучение; деятельность, функции учителя).

"I fear, my lord (я боюсь, мой повелитель)," the girl answered, timidly (робко ответила девушка).

"Then give me the basket (тогда отдай мне корзину)."

"Nay, my lord, whither thou goest, there will I go also (нет, мой повелитель, куда пойдешь ты, туда пойду и я)."

"The deuce you will (черта с два ты пойдешь; deuce— черт /в проклятиях, ругательствах, как эмоционально-усилительное восклицание/)" thought I to myself (подумал я про себя); "that will be rather awkward if ever we get out of this (и это будет довольно затруднительно, если мы вообще когда-нибудь выберемся отсюда; awkward— неуклюжий, неловкий /о людях, движениях и т.п./; неудобный, затруднительный)."

Without further ado Gagool plunged into the passage (без долгих разговоров Гагула нырнула в проход; ado— суета, суматоха; хлопоты; with out further ado— без дальнейших хлопот; без долгих разговоров; to plunge— нырять; бросаться, врываться), which was wide enough to admit of two walking abreast, and quite dark (который был достаточно широк, чтобы вместить двоих идущих рядом людей, и был совершенно темным; to admit— допускать, соглашаться; вмещать /о помещении/; abreast— в ряд, на одной линии), we following her voice as she piped to us to come on, in some fear and trembling (/при этом/ мы следовали за ней, /двигаясь в направлении/ ее голоса, которым она пищала нам, чтобы мы продолжали идти, с некоторым страхом и содроганием), which was not allayed by the sound of a sudden rush of wings (которые нисколько не уменьшились от звука внезапно захлопавших крыльев;to allay— успокаивать, подавлять /страх, волнение, боль/; rush— стремительное движение, бросок; to rush— бросаться, мчаться).

"Hallo! what's that (эй, что это такое)?" hallooed Good (воскликнул Гуд); "somebody hit me in the face (кто-то ударил меня по лицу)."

Let the reader picture to himself the hall of the vastest cathedral he ever stood in (пусть читатель представит себе зал самого огромного собора, в котором он когда-либо находился; picture — картина, рисунок; представление, мысленный образ; to picture — изображать на картине, рисовать; представлять себе, воображать), windowless, indeed, but dimly lighted from above (без окон, конечно же, но тускло освещаемый откуда-то сверху) (presumably by shafts connected with the outer air and driven in the roof (вероятно, через шахты, проложенные в потолке: «крыше», которые были связаны с воздухом, находящимся снаружи; shaft — древко/копья/; шахта, ствол шахты; to drive — подгонять, гнать; проводить, прокладывать/туннель и т.п./; outer — внешний, наружный), which arched away a hundred feet above our heads (и потолок /при этом/ поднимался сводом на сотню футов над нашими головами)), and he will get some idea of the size of the enormous cave in which we stood (и тогда он получит приблизительное представление о размерах той огромной пещеры, в которой мы находились: «стояли»), with the difference that this cathedral designed of nature was loftier and wider than any built by man (с той разницей, что собор, созданный природой, был гораздо выше и шире, чем любой /собор/, построенный человеком; lofty — очень высокий/не олюдях/).
