A groan of terror burst from the group before us (стон ужаса вырвался у группы /мужчин, стоявших/ перед нами).

"If ye want meat (если вам нужно мясо)," I remarked, coolly (невозмутимо заметил я; coolly— свежо, прохладно; спокойно, хладнокровно), "go fetch that buck (то пойдите и принесите эту антилопу)."

I raised the rifle, and covered the buck. It was a small animal, and one which one might well be excused for missing, but I knew that it would not do to miss.

There was no answer (ответа не последовало).

"If ye yet doubt our power (если вы все еще сомневаетесь в наших силах)," I went on, "let one of ye go stand upon that rock (пусть один из вас пойдет и встанет на той скале), that I may make him as this buck (чтобы я смог подстрелить его, как этого самца)."

These are wizards, indeed (эти люди на самом деле волшебники). Let us bring them to the king (давайте отведем их к королю). None of them seemed at all inclined to take the hint, till at last the king's son spoke.

"It is well said. Do thou, my uncle, go stand upon the rock. It is but a buck that the magic has killed. Surely it cannot kill a man."

"It is so (это так)," remarked the old gentleman, in a tone of intense relief (заметил старик тоном глубокого облегчения; intense — сильный; глубокий); "without any doubt it is so (без всякого сомнения, это так). Listen, children of the stars (послушайте, дети звезд), children of the shining eye and the movable teeth (дети блестящего глаза и подвижных зубов), who roar out in thunder and slay from afar (/вы/, которые ревут громом и убивают на расстоянии; afar — далеко, вдали; from afar — издалека, издали). I am Infadoos, son of Kafa, once king of the Kukuana people (я — Инфадус, сын Кафы, бывшего когда-то королем кукуанского народа). This youth is Scragga (этот юноша — Скрагга)."

"He nearly scragged me (он едва не укокошил меня; игра слов: to scrag — свернуть шею; убивать/кого-либо/)," murmured Good (пробормотал Гуд).
