"It is well, my lords, we will lead you, but the way is long (хорошо, мои повелители, мы отведем вас, но путь /предстоит/ длинный). We are hunting three days' journey from the place of the king (мы охотимся /на расстоянии/ трехдневного пути от дворца короля). But let my lords have patience, and we will lead them (пусть мои повелители будут терпеливы, и мы отведем их; patience — терпеливость, терпение)?

"It is well (хорошо)," I said, carelessly (сказал я беспечно), "all time is before us, for we do not die (все время перед нами = вся жизнь перед нами, потому что мы не умираем; before— зд. указывает на что-либо предстоящее: перед). We are ready; lead on (мы готовы, веди нас). But Infadoos, and thou, Scragga, beware (но, Инфадус, и ты, Скрагга, остерегайтесь)! Play us no tricks (не пытайтесь нас обмануть; trick— хитрость, обман; to play smb. at rick— обмануть кого-либо, сыграть с кем-либо шутку), make for us no snares (не расставляйте нам ловушек; snare— силок; западня, ловушка), for before your brains of mud have thought of them (потому что, прежде чем ваши мозги из грязи подумают о них) we shall know them and avenge them (мы узнаем о них и отомстим за них).

The light from the transparent eye of him with the bare legs and the half-haired face (Good) shall destroy you (свет из прозрачного глаза того, чьи ноги голы, и лицо наполовину покрыто волосами (Гуда), уничтожит вас), and go through your land (и пройдет по всей вашей земле); his vanishing teeth shall fix themselves fast in you and eat you up (его исчезающие зубы крепко вцепятся в вас и сожрут вас; to fix — устанавливать, прикреплять; укреплять, закреплять), you and your wives and children (вас, и ваших жен, и ваших детей); the magic tubes shall talk with you loudly, and make you as sieves (волшебные трубки громко заговорят с вами, и сделают из вас решето). Beware (остерегайтесь)!"

This magnificent address did not fail of its effect (это великолепное обращение произвело должное впечатление; to fail — недоставать, не хватать; потерпеть неудачу, не иметь успеха; effect — результат, следствие; действие, влияние); indeed, it was hardly needed (на самом деле, оно вряд ли было необходимо), so deeply were our friends already impressed with our powers (настолько сильно наши друзья уже были поражены нашим могуществом; deeply — глубоко; крайне, очень, в высокой степени).

These at once proceeded to lay hold of all our goods and chattels (те немедленно принялись поднимать все наши пожитки и имущество; hold — удержание, захват; to lay hold of smth. — брать, хватать что-либо; chattel — движимое имущество), in order to bear them for us (чтобы нести их за нас), excepting only the guns, which they would on no account touch (за исключением только ружей, к которым они не прикоснулись бы ни в коем случае). They even seized Good's clothes (они даже схватили одежду Гуда), which were, as the reader may remember, neatly folded up beside him (которая была, как читатель, возможно, помнит, аккуратно сложена рядом с ним).

"Let not my lord of the transparent eye and the melting teeth touch them (пусть мой повелитель с прозрачным глазом и исчезающими зубами не прикасается к ней; to melt— таять; исчезать, растворяться)," said the old man. "Surely his slaves shall carry the things (конечно же его рабы понесут его вещи)."
