They set off to the tower on the right of the castle- but it was quite clear that whatever entrance there might have been once, it was gone now! The castle had fallen in very much just there, and there were piles of old broken stones everywhere, quite impossible to move.	Именно здесь стены обвалились особенно сильно - повсюду лежали груды разбитых камней, которые невозможно было сдвинуть с места.
The children soon gave up the search.	Ребята скоро прекратили поиски.

Dick thought it all over.	Дик немного подумал.
He went to the well and peered down it.	Он подошел к колодцу и заглянул в него.

He tried his best to squeeze by it, but it was very difficult. At last he managed it and after that Anne could see him no more. But she could hear him, for he kept calling up to her. It's broken just here. Broken right off.	Лестница здесь сломана или кончилась.
Or else it ends. I'll have to use my rope."	Придется воспользоваться веревкой.
There was a silence as Dick unwound the rope from his waist.	Наступило молчание - Дик разматывал веревку.
He tied it firmly to the last but one rung of the ladder, which seemed quite strong.	Потом он крепко привязал ее к предпоследней ступеньке лестницы, которая показалась ему прочной.

Anne couldn't hear what Dick said after that, for the well-shaft made his words go crooked and she couldn't make out what they were. But she was glad to hear him shouting even though she didn't know what he said. Tim suddenly gave a growl.	Тимми вдруг зарычал.
He leapt to his feet and went to the closed door, his head on one side.	Он вскочил и подошел к запертой двери, склонив голову набок и прислушиваясь.
He had heard something, that was certain.	Было ясно, он что-то услышал.
"I hope it's not those men back again already," said George.	– Надеюсь, эти двое не вернулись так скоро, -сказала Джордж.

Chapter Sixteen A PLAN- AND A NARROW ESCAPE	СМЕЛЫЙ ПЛАН И УДАЧНЫЙ ПОБЕГ
DICK unbolted the door at the top and bottom and flung it open.	Дик отодвинул обе щеколды - верхнюю и нижнюю - и распахнул дверь.
He rushed in and thumped George and Julian happily on the back.	Он вбежал в каземат и бросился к Джордж и Джулиану.
"Hallo!" he said.	– Привет, - крикнул он.
"How does it feel to be rescued?"	– Ну как, здорово выйти на свободу?
"Fine!" cried Julian, and Tim barked madly round them.	– Очень здорово, - ответил Джулиан, а Тимми, как безумный, стал прыгать вокруг.
George grinned at Dick.	Джордж улыбнулась Дику:
"Good work!" she said.	– Ты - молодец!
"What happened?"	Как это тебе удалось?
Dick told them in a few words all that had happened.	Дик в нескольких словах описал все события.

When he related how he had climbed down the old well, George and Julian could hardly believe their ears.	Когда он рассказывал о том, как спустился в старый колодец, они просто не поверили своим ушам.

They ran to the well-shaft and squeezed through the small opening one by one.	Ребята побежали к колодцу и по одному протиснулись через отверстие к стенке.
Up the rope they went, and soon found the iron ladder.	Потом они влезли по веревке и добрались до лестницы.
Julian made them go up one by one in case the ladder wouldn't bear the weight of all three at once.	Джулиан сказал, что здесь снова надо подниматься по одному - вдруг лестница не выдержит всех троих сразу.
It really wasn't very long before they were all up in the open air once more, giving Anne hugs, and hearing her exclaim gladly, with tears in her eyes, how pleased she was to see them all again. They won't be back for some time, I should think, because you can't charter a ship all in a hurry- unless, of course, they've got one of their own." "I'll be the one to go down and hide. I'll do my best to bolt the men into the room. And if I have to escape I'll climb up the well-shaft again.	– Внизу спрячусь именно я и постараюсь запереть их в этом складе, а если потребуется бежать, снова, выберусь по веревке и по лестнице через колодец.
The men don't know about that. So even if they are not prisoners in the dungeon room, they'll be prisoners underground!"	Эти двое не знают про колодец, так что, даже если они не окажутся пленниками в пещере, они останутся взаперти в подземелье.
The children talked over this plan, and decided that it was the best they could think of.	Ребята еще раз обсудили этот план и решили, что лучшего им все равно не придумать.
Then George said she thought it would be a good thing to have a meal.	Потом Джордж сказала, что хорошо бы перекусить.

There sounded to be more than two men this time.	Теперь их было не двое, а больше.

He felt certain they were pulling away the slabs of stone that had been piled on top of the entrance to prevent Dick and Anne going down to rescue the others. "I think the men have gone down the steps into the dungeons now.	– По-моему, они ушли вниз.

George, Julian and Anne ran softly and swiftly to the old courtyard of the castle.	Все трое побежали на старый двор замка.
They saw that the stones had been pulled away from the entrance to the dungeons. The men had disappeared.	Камни действительно были отвалены от входа, мужчин больше не было видно.
They had plainly gone down the steps.	Они наверняка спустились вниз.

The three children did their best to tug at the heavy stones to drag them back. But their strength was not the same as that of the men, and they could not manage to get any very big stones across.	Ребята изо всех сил старались подтащить большие камни ко входу в подземелье, но у них не было столько сил, сколько у взрослых мужчин, поэтому они не смогли справиться с тяжелыми крупными глыбами.
They put three smaller ones, and Julian hoped the men would find them too difficult to move from below.	Они закрыли вход тремя камнями поменьше, и Джулиан надеялся, что мужчинам будет трудно отвалить их, действуя снизу.
"If only Dick has managed to bolt them into that room!" he said to the others.	– Только бы Дику удалось запереть их! – сказал он.

Dick will have to come up there, because he won't be able to get out of the entrance."	Дик поднимется там, он ведь не сможет выйти здесь.
They all went to the well.	Они пошли к колодцу.
Dick had removed the old wooden cover, and it was lying on the ground.	Дик снял старую деревянную крышку, и она лежала на земле.
The children leaned over the hole of the well and waited anxiously.	Ребята наклонились над краем колодца и с нетерпением смотрели вниз.
What was Dick doing?	Что там делает Дик?
They could hear nothing from the well and they longed to know what was happening.	Они ничего не слышали, а им так хотелось знать, что же происходит внизу!
There was plenty happening down below!	А внизу происходило множество событий.
The two men, and another, had gone down into the dungeons, expecting, of course, to find Julian, George and the dog still locked up in the store-room with the ingots.	Те двое мужчин и - с ними еще один спустились в подземелье, считая, что Джордж, Джулиан и собака сидят взаперти в складе со слитками.
They passed the well-shaft not guessing that an excited small boy was hidden there, ready to slip out of the opening as soon as they had passed.	Они прошли мимо шахты колодца, не подозревая, что там прячется взволнованный мальчик, готовый вылезти через отверстие в стенке, как только они пройдут мимо.
Dick heard them pass.	Дик слышал, как они прошли.
He slipped out of the well-opening and followed behind quietly, his feet making no sound.	Он вылез из колодца и бесшумно последовал за ними.
He could see the beams made by the men's powerful torches, and with his heart thumping loudly he crept along the smelly old passages, between great caves, until the men turned into the wide passage where the storecave lay. С бьющимся сердцем он крался по старым, пахнущим затхлостью коридорам между большими пещерами до тех пор, пока мужчины не свернули в широкий проход перед деревянной дверью в склад.
"Here it is," Dick heard one of the men say, as he flashed his torch on to the great door.	– Вот она! – услышал Дик голос одного из мужчин и увидел пятно света на двери, куда тот направил свой фонарь.
"The gold's in there- so are the kids!"	– Золото здесь, и дети - тоже.
The man unbolted the door at top and bottom.	Мужчина отодвинул верхнюю и нижнюю щеколды.

Dick was glad that he had slipped along to bolt the door, for if he hadn't done that before the men had come they would have known that Julian and George had escaped, and would have been on their guard.	Дик был рад, что он успел их задвинуть. Не сделай он этого до прихода этих людей, они бы сразу увидели, что ребят нет внутри, и насторожились бы.
The man opened the door and stepped inside.	Мужчина открыл дверь и вошел внутрь.
The second man followed him.	Второй шел вслед за ним.
Dick crept as close as he dared, waiting for the third man to go in too.	Дик подобрался как можно ближе и ждал, пока зайдет третий.
Then he meant to slam the door and bolt it!	Тогда он собирался захлопнуть дверь и запереть ее.
The first man swung his torch round and gave a loud exclamation.	Первый мужчина обвел стены фонариком и вскрикнул от удивления:
"The children are gone!	– Детей здесь нет!
How strange!	Как странно.
Where are they?"	Где же они?
Two of the men were now in the cave- and the third stepped in at that moment.	Двое в этот момент были уже в складе, а третий как раз входил в него.
Dick darted forward and slammed the door.	Дик бросился вперед и захлопнул дверь.
It made a crash that went echoing round and round the caves and passages.	Раздался грохот, и эхо громко откликнулось в переходах и пещерах.
Dick fumbled with the bolts, his hand trembling.	Дик дрожащими руками взялся за щеколды.
They were stiff and rusty.	Они были тугие и ржавые.
The boy found it hard to shoot them home in their sockets.	Мальчику было трудно задвинуть их в гнезда.
And meanwhile the men were not idle!	А мужчины не теряли времени!
As soon as they heard the door slam they spun round.	Услышав стук двери, они сразу же обернулись.
The third man put his shoulder to the door at once and heaved hard.	Третий навалился плечом на дверь и сильно нажал.
Dick had just got one of the bolts almost into its socket.	Дик в этот момент почти задвинул одну из щеколд в гнездо.
Then all three men forced their strength against the door, and the bolt gave way!	Но тут все трое навалились на дверь, и щеколда сломалась.
Dick stared in horror. The door was opening!	Дик в ужасе смотрел, как открывается дверь!
He turned and fled down the dark passage.	Он повернулся и побежал по темному проходу.
The men flashed their torches on and saw him.	Мужчины осветили проход фонарями и увидели Дика.
They went after the boy at top speed.	Они бегом бросились в погоню за ним.
Dick fled to the well-shaft.	Дик добежал до колодца.
Fortunately the opening was on the opposite side, and he could clamber into it without being seen in the light of the torches.	К счастью, отверстие было с другой стороны, и мальчику удалось пролезть внутрь, не попав в свет фонарей.
