Before interpreting this to Sir Henry, who had the light, I could not resist asking how she knew these things, if no one had entered the place since the white man, generations ago.

"Ah, Macumazahn, who watchest by night," was the mocking answer, "ye who live in the stars, do ye not know that some have eyes that can see through rock?"

"Look in that corner, Curtis," I said, indicating the spot. Gagool had pointed out.

"Hallo, you fellows," he said, "here's a recess. Great heavens! look here."

We hurried up to where he was standing in a nook, something like a small bow-window (мы бросились туда, где он стоял в какой-то нише, немного похожей на небольшое окно с выступом; bow-window — окно с выступом, эркер). Against the wall of this recess were placed three stone chests (у стены этой самой ниши стояли три каменных сундука), each about two feet square (каждый /размером/ около двух квадратных футов). Two were fitted with stone lids (два ящика были оснащены = закрыты каменными крышками), the lid of the third rested against the side of the chest, which was open (крышка третьего, открытого ящика, опиралась о ящик).

"Look!" he repeated, hoarsely, holding the lamp over the open chest (повторил он, хрипло, держа светильник над открытым сундуком). We looked, and for a moment could make nothing out, on account of a silvery sheen that dazzled us (мы взглянули, и какое-то мгновение мы ничего не могли разобрать из-за серебристого блеска, который ослепил нас). There was something so ridiculous at that moment to my mind in the idea of eating and drinking diamonds (для меня в тот момент идея есть и пить алмазы показалась настолько нелепой; ridiculous — нелепый, смехотворный, смешной; to my mind — по моему мнению) that I began to laugh outrageously (что я начал неистово хохотать; outrageous — возмутительный, оскорбительный; чрезмерный, крайний), an example which the others, followed, without knowing why (и этому примеру последовали и другие, сами не зная почему).

"Hee! hee! hee!" went old Gagool behind us, as she flitted about like a vampire bat. "There are the bright stones that ye love, white men, as many as ye will; take them, run them through your fingers, eat of them, hee! hee! drink of them, ha! ha!"

There was something so ridiculous at that moment to my mind in the idea of eating and drinking diamonds that I began to laugh outrageously, an example which the others, followed, without knowing why.

Solomon never got them, nor David, nor Da Silvestra, nor anybody else (Соломон так никогда и не получил их, ни Давид[1], ни Да Силвештра, и никто другой).
